Southern California skate-punk veterans Unwritten Law recently returned with The Hum, the seventh studio album from the band and the first since 2011.
A compelling concept album with a bit of a focus on our reliance on technology — check that band photo above with each member gazing into his mobile device screen — The Hum packs quite a punch. As Unwritten Law exhibited with 2002’s breakthrough album Elva, the band is at its best when taking the most risks, and that continues with the unpredictable flow of the new material..
This week, a two-part short film was released for two songs off the album, “Magnetic” and “The Hum.” More about the short film, per a news release:
Directed by Joseph Russo, the short film follows the story of a couple, played by Tyler Posey and Tehya Elam, as they enter an alternate reality world known as The Hum. The two become obsessed with the lives they lead in this alternate reality and eventually sacrifice their real life for the fantasy life that will never come to be.

Originally forming in 1989 in Poway, California, Unwritten Law cut its teeth in the underground punk scene of the early ’90s before releasing its debut album, 1994’s Blue Room. 2002’s Elva, the band’s fourth album, pushed the group into the mainstream, a genre-hopping selection of songs dabbling in pop-punk, skate-punk and alt/rock crystallized most accessibly with “Seein’ Red,” which hit No. 1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
2005’s Here’s to the Mourning became the band’s highest-charting record thanks to the success of “Save Me (Wake Up Call),” co-written by Russo, Aimee Allen (now of the Interrupters) and Linda Perry:
And “Celebration Song”:
One more album followed in 2011 before a lengthy gap between albums that was ended with the recent release of The Hum.
