These are busy times for The Immediate Family!
Today, Dec. 12, a brand new documentary film about the esteemed rock and roll supergroup — Danny Kortchmar (guitar and vocals), Waddy Wachtel (guitar and vocals), Leland Sklar (bass), Russ Kunkel (drums) and Steve Postell (guitar and vocals) — holds a one-night-only theatrical event nationwide, before the film is available on streaming and video on-demand on Dec. 15.
Here’s the trailer for the film (click here for more information on the film’s release), which came to life from director Denny Tedesco (The Wrecking Crew).
And a heads-up about availability on Dec. 15:
The past year-plus saw the project make the rounds at several film festivals around the world, earning acclaim everywhere it went — building up to its anticipated wide release this week.
Meanwhile, the Immediate Family is also gearing up to release a new studio album, Skin in the Game, on Feb. 16, 2024, via Quarto Valley Records. The record features 14 songs and was self-produced by the musicians themselves.
Here’s one of the originals, “Whole Lotta Rock and Roll,” which was debuted on Tuesday and was written and sung by Wachtel:

The other song shared ahead of the album so far is a cover of Sparks’ “The Toughest Girl in Town”:
For a bit of context surrounding the Immediate Family and their impressive resume of work as seasoned vets in the business, here’s a bit from a news release:
The tight-knit quintet initially rose to prominence working with some of rock’s biggest names, such as Keith Richards, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Billy Joel, David Crosby and Joni Mitchell, to name a few – but now they have reinforced their own identity as The Immediate Family. “This band has such power. It’s almost like an embarrassment of riches,” states Wachtel. “We just knew we had all moved up to the next level in the group. It was such a great feeling, one that is the real reason all of us do what we do.” Leland Sklar adds, “The Immediate Family’s unrivaled musical chemistry comes from years of playing together. We all know each other backward and forward and can play to each other’s strengths in ways that other groups can’t always get to.”

More on the documentary film and its scope, per a news release:
Immediate Family tracks the rise and collaborations of a group of legendary session musicians Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel, and Waddy Wachtel through the 1970s and onward, chronicling their illustrious partnerships and their formidable record of hit-making. Directed by Denny Tedesco, whose documentary THE WRECKING CREW followed the first wave of studio musicians in the 60s, the film reveals the machinery behind the booming era of the singer-songwriter, when the talents of these four musicians were in furious demand. The foundations of their enduring friendship, formed on the road and in studios, is recalled with dynamite clarity —reminisced with fondness through intimate interviews with the guys themselves, as well as the memories of some of rock’smost iconic voices including Carole King, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Keith Richards, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, David Crosby, Jackson Browne, Lyle Lovett, Phil Collins, and more. IMMEDIATE FAMILY is a backstage tour spanning multiple eras of musical history.
