When we last heard from Kittie, the Canadian heavy metal band was demolishing the stage at both the When We Were Young and Sick New World Festivals in Las Vegas.

The group had been maintaining a sporadic live schedule at that point, but this burst of activity did indicate some new music was on the way — and it has now arrived in the form of “Eyes Wide Open,” a crushing new anthem debuted by the group on Wednesday.

In keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme, the video for the track is bathed in reds and blacks, and the whole thing is a loud, proud reintroduction from the band:

The song was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush, Alice In Chains, Korn) and introduces Kittie’s new era with Sumerian Records.

Said vocalist/co-founder Morgan Lander of the band’s team-up with Sumerian:

“Sometimes, incredible opportunities present themselves in surprising ways. Just a few years ago we could have never imagined we would be getting ready to release new music as Kittie. We’ve been given what feels like a second life and are grateful to Ash and the Sumerian family for believing in us.”

Added Lander of “Eyes Wide Open”:

“Our first new material in 13 years, ‘Eyes Wide Open’ is a vision quest for truth. It is a torch lit in the darkness of ignorance to reveal one’s true motives. ‘Eyes Wide Open’ is a lesson in trust, betrayal, and ultimately the ability to see behind the curtain to reveal all. It was one of the first songs we wrote, coming together again after a long time away from creating, and I think you can really hear the fires reigniting in this track.”

To date, Kittie has released six studio albums, the last being 2011’s I’ve Failed You.

Kittie is Lander, drummer Mercedes Lander, guitarist Tara McLeod and bassist Ivana “Ivy” Jenkins.

Stay tuned for more, because Kittie has big plans for the year ahead.
