There was a lot going on in downtown San Diego on Friday, July 21. Comic-Con was entertaining thousands at the Convention Center, the annual comics/pop culture convention packing the streets with costumed revelers and avid entertainment junkies.
Mere feet away, the Amplified Echoes tour — a co-headlining summer run from Jimmy Eat World and Manchester Orchestra, along with special guests Middle Kids — played Gallagher Square at Petco Park, a venue/stage area attached to the home ballpark of Major League Baseball’s Padres.
This was the scene of yet another notable event for San Diego visitors to experience on the evening, and for a few hours, each band turned in a stellar performance for the gathered masses.
Middle Kids warmed up the crowd with a set that saw the Australian indie band play material from its two studio albums, the most recent being 2021’s Today We’re the Greatest. Lead vocalist/guitarist Hannah Joy, bassist Tim Fitz and drummer Harry Day at one point expressed that some of their “worst” gigs to date took place in the city — but this time, they considered it one of the best of their career.

Manchester Orchestra has released six albums since its formation in 2004, the most recent being 2021’s The Million Masks of God, and much of that back catalog was represented in the band’s set. Andy Hull’s lead vocals were crisp and quite impressive, the band had boundless energy and the crowd sang along to nearly every song — indicative of the legacy Manchester Orchestra has built along the course of its time together.

Jimmy Eat World capped the night’s festivities with a masterful set reflecting the Arizona indie/alternative band‘s place as enduring icons of their era, a killer live act that seems to get better as the years fly by.
Favoring 2004’s Futures with five selections from the fan-favorite album, the band — Jim Adkins, Zach Lind, Tom Linton and Rick Burch — had a dazzling light show behind them, knocking two of their best-known singles (“Bleed American” and “Sweetness,” both from 2001’s Bleed American album) out early to get the crowd into a frenzy.
The band played its two 2022 standalone singles, “Place Your Debts” and “Something Loud,” alongside several other classics and deep cuts from throughout its catalog, which to this point spans 10 studio albums and a handful of EPs.
As such, the band has an impeccable chemistry together onstage, one that ignited the energy in the audience for the entirety of their set and affirmed the band’s reputation as a can’t-miss live act.
The set list:

Something Loud
