On Aug. 18, 1967, the Jimi Hendrix Experience took the stage at the Hollywood Bowl as relative unknowns.
Just five days later, the group would begin its climb to superstardom upon releasing its debut album, Are You Experienced, in the U.S. — making this Bowl performance one of the last times the guitar legend and his band mates entertained the masses as an up-and-coming group.
Today, Nov. 10, the full live concert has been released — marking the first time this performance has been released in full in any capacity.

In addition to the live album, a short documentary film was also released pertaining to this crucial formative era in Hendrix’s career. From the Monkees to the Hollywood Bowl traces his path as he built his legacy and, eventually, became one of the most important musical and cultural figures in history.
Per its description, the documentary details the musician’s brief post-Monterey Pop tenure as the opening act for The Monkees July 1967, and his time opening for The Mamas & The Papas at the Hollywood Bowl.
Also accompanying the live album is another short documentary, Monterey Pop to the Hollywood Bowl, chronicling a crucial era for Hendrix:
Monterey Pop To The Hollywood Bowl is a new mini-documentary which details Jimi Hendrix’s tumultuous journey upon his return to the US in June 1967, through August of that year. Featuring new interviews from The Mamas & The Papas vocalist Michelle Phillips, longtime Paul McCartney guitarist Brian Ray and others, the impact of Hendrix’s Hollywood Bowl performance by eye witnesses is discussed, and is placed in historic context.
