To attend a live concert is to immerse yourself in an escape from the stresses of the “real world,” a few hours spent with hundreds or thousands of like-minded individuals all there for the same reason. It can be an emotional experience, for sure — just ask this little girl at a recent Disturbed concert.

The hard-rock/metal band is out on a big tour in support of its latest album, Divisive, and at an Aug. 3 show in West Palm Beach, vocalist David Draiman paused the show and delivered a rousing speech that will strike a chord with anybody who frequently heads out to gigs.

Here’s what apparently went down: Draiman noticed a young girl up close to the stage singing along to every song and invited her on stage. This caught her off guard, and she began crying, prompting Draiman to hop down from the stage and address the girl and her star-struck parents directly.

This went on for a few minutes, Draiman delivering a thoughtful, unrehearsed speech that may surprise anybody who might otherwise not expect to hear such insight from the lead singer of a metal band that made it big decades ago in the “nu-metal” scene.

Here’s the video:

And as for what Draiman had to say:

“See, I love, absolutely love, that Disturbed concerts have become a family affair. I love it. And this little girl has been singing her heart out the entire show. She knows so many of the songs,” added Draiman before pointing out that his son was also at the show, watching from the side of the stage.

“What’s the worst thing that a child is going to encounter? A little bit of profanity? We live in a world where there are so much more vile and ugly things in it than profanity.

“There’s a time and place for everything, darling, you’ll come to learn that one day.

“And as I look out at this sea of people, and it never gets old, by the way, seeing so many people packed into an amphitheater night after night. But I see people, all kinds of people, all colors of skin, all backgrounds. It doesn’t matter what your politics are here, we don’t care. It doesn’t matter how you identify yourself, we don’t care. Everyone here, everyone who comes to a Disturbed concert is welcomed and accepted and loved.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from or who you are. All of us came here tonight for the same reason. All of us came here tonight because the world is hard. Life is hard. And you come here to take your burdens and to set them down!

“Besides, darling,” he addressed the girl,” We may be dark. But let me share a secret with you. Sometimes darkness can show you the light.”

Draiman is no stranger to baring some raw emotions on stage at Disturbed concerts. As the Guardian points out, he addressed the crowd at a show back in May about addiction and depression, making references to “friends we’ve lost” including Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, and added.

‘The demons that are known as addiction and depression are very, very real,’ he began. ‘You can’t see depression, you can’t see addiction. It festers inside, it metastasizes, it takes over your body, your mind, your soul.’

He added: “And if I could be completely honest with you, a couple months ago, I almost joined them.”

Even the most staunch non-fan of Disturbed’s music has to respect what Draiman is doing in instances like these. It’s powerful stuff.

Disturbed has a few more dates left on its current tour — visit the band’s site for full details.
