Earlier this week, San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie revealed plans to have the city host Dead & Company for three massive outdoor concert events at Golden Gate Park on Aug. 1-3.
Dead & Company, of course, features Grateful Dead alumni Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, as well as special guests including John Mayer — the ensemble delivering marathon sets in the vein of the Dead’s heyday, delivered with a reverence honoring late band leader Jerry Garcia, bassist Phil Lesh and beyond.
These planned San Francisco shows will be a commemoration of the Dead’s 60th anniversary — as well as its roots in San Francisco and the surrounding area — would take place over the weekend prior to the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, which is scheduled for Aug. 8-10 on those same Golden Gate polo fields.
Per KRON 4 in the Bay Area:
The proposal for this summer’s concerts will go before the Recreation and Parks Commission on Thursday. If approved, the concert series will be presented by Another Planet Entertainment and co-produced with Live Nation in partnership with SF Rec and Parks.
“From Haight-Ashbury and the Grateful Dead house to Ingleside, where Jerry Garcia grew up, the Grateful Dead is embedded in San Francisco’s history,” said Mayor Lurie. “Sixty years later, we’re still enjoying their music—and this summer, we get to enjoy the music of Dead & Company once again. The weekend will celebrate our city’s creative spirit, boost our local economy, and bring generations of fans together. This is more than just a concert—it’s a San Francisco homecoming.”
“Golden Gate Park and the Grateful Dead share a rich, intertwined history that helped shape a cultural era,” said SF Recs and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “Celebrating their 60th anniversary with a Dead & Company performance in the very place where the Summer of Love took root is a powerful tribute to their legacy. These concerts not only honor their cultural impact but also shine a light on the park’s surrounding neighborhood—its restaurants, local businesses, and vibrant community.”
Dead & Company is currently headlining Sphere in Las Vegas for another run of the ensemble’s Dead Forever residency. As one of the repeat acts to take the stage at the Vegas venue since it opened, the shows are mind[blowing experiences – check below for more.
