This six years between albums for Los Angeles indie band Warpaint were filled with personal milestones, life accomplishments and reflection — and the resulting record, Radiate Like This, does just that: it radiates.

Released today, May 6, Radiate Like This is an engrossing, percussive listening experience heavy on sweeping compositions and ethereal vibes from the group, which put itself on the map with its 2010 debut, The Fool.

“Making this album was a labor of love,” says the band. “It is the joyous culmination of four musical minds over the course of a few wild and heart-opening years. We’re thrilled to finally share it with you.”

It wasn’t a given that the members of Warpaint would actually reconvene for more music, apparently. Per a news release, Emily Kokal (guitars/vocals), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals), Stella Mozgawa (drums/vocals) and Theresa Wayman (guitars/vocals) kept plenty busy “living. Babies, jobs, tours, solo albums, intercontinental and cross country moves all became priorities, presenting mounting logistical challenges to getting the band back together, as they say, and allowing a little space to think “what if we didn’t?”

It’s a good thing the quartet did decide to give it another go, because Radiate Like This is a stellar addition to the band’s repertoire.

Given the stated uncertainty of Warpaint’s future combined with the harsh realities of a global pandemic, it’s a wonder the album was made at all — more so when you consider the fact that the four musicians were separated due to the circumstances, each recording her parts individually, disconnected from the rest of the group.

Listening to the record, you’d never know it. The cohesion and chemistry that infuses each song with that singular Warpaint sound is intact, the energies immaculately conceived and expressed and the whole thing enveloping the listener to great effect.

That’s a pretty remarkable feat, given the separation of the recording process, so kudos to all involved for the achievement.

No longer restricted by pandemic separation, Warpaint will head out on a tour soon covering much of the next few months — so don’t miss out.
