The back-and-forth between Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse, otherwise known as Tom & Jerry, began when William Hanna and Joseph Barbera put together the first short films in the series for MGM in 1940 — eighty years ago — and the rivalry is still very much in effect.

In 2021, a new film blending animation and live action will be released, continuing their decades-long feud.

The synopsis is simple: A hotel employee hires Tom the cat to get rid of Jerry the Mouse, and the film’s new trailer shared on Tuesday is full of energy, visual gags, pigeons singing Lizzo and more:

In addition to its animated lead characters, the film stars real-life actors Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Rob Delaney, Colin Jost and Ken Jeong, and was directed by Tim Story. It will be the second full-length Tom Cat and Jerry Mouse film, and the first since a widely-panned 1992 version. Originally conceived in 2009 after the box office success of 2007’s Alvin & the Chipmunks, this new adaptation was mired in production issues for years, finally rounding into shape for this planned 2021 release.

Its scheduled release date, as of now, is March 5, 2021 in theaters … though that part is contingent upon the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and the degree to which new vaccine research and development (thanks, Dolly Parton!)
