In 1984, filmmaker Rob Reiner hit a masterstroke with This Is Spinal Tap, the rock and roll/heavy metal mockumentary that became a cultural phenomenon and remains an unassailable comedy classic to this day.

Per a report from Deadline on Thursday, Reiner is apparently all-systems-go on a sequel to the original film, with stars/comedy legends Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer attached to reprise their roles as David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufner and Derek Smalls, respectively.

Per Deadline:

Guest, McKean, Reiner, and Shearer will conceive the new film. Frank Marshall will produce and Matthew George, Jonathan Fuhrman and Hernan Narea will executive produce on behalf of Castle Rock. George is CR co-president with Michele Reiner.

Deadline caught up with Reiner, and here is how he described the ambition: “The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”

Stay tuned for more on the sure to be epic return of Spinal Tap.
