From the first few bars of gentle acoustic guitar paired with piano, you know you’re in for something special with I Don’t Live Here Anymore, the new album from Philadelphia-based indie/rock band The War on Drugs.

Released today, Oct. 29, the record continues the remarkable string of solid releases from the group in its follow-up to 2017’s acclaimed and Grammy-winning A Deeper Understanding, with ten new tracks of introspective, thoughtful compositions that at times call to mind the earnestness of classic rock legends such as Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.

The War on Drugs is an “album band” in the streaming era. Their records are experiences from start to finish, sweeping emotions and soaring guitars cascading around band leader Adam Granduciel’s vocals.

The album sessions for I Don’t Live Here Anymore began shortly after that Grammy win for A Deeper Understanding, which took home the award for Best Rock Album. Per a news release:

The core of bandleader Adam Granduciel, bassist Dave Hartley, and multi-instrumentalist Anthony LaMarca retreated to upstate New York to jam and cut new demos, working outside of the predetermined roles each member plays in the live setting. These sessions proved highly productive, turning out early versions of some of the most immediate songs on I Don’t Live Here Anymore. It was the start of a dozen-plus session odyssey that spanned three years and seven studios, including some of rock’s greatest sonic workshops like Electric Lady in New York and Los Angeles’ Sound City. Band leader Granduciel and trusted co-producer/engineer Shawn Everett spent untold hours peeling back every piece of these songs and rebuilding them.

Simultaneously wistful, hopeful, melancholy and reflective, I Don’t Live Here Anymore will stand up as one of the year’s best releases and is another excellent entry to The War on Drugs’ amazing run of albums.
