When The Mars Volta returned in June with a new song, the first in over a decade from the consistently genre-defying musical project helmed by guitarist/composer Omar Rodríguez-López and singer/lyricist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, it inspired hope of a new album — and that’s exactly what’s coming on Sept. 6.

That’s the day a self-titled effort from the band will be released, the seventh Mars Volta record overall and the first since 2012’s Noctourniquet.

The news was made official with the recent premiere of another single, “Vigil”:

The track joins the previously debuted “Blacklight Shine,” which received an 11-minute short film/video:

And “Graveyard Love”:

A news release notes that the short films, directed by Rodríguez-López, “depict the beauty of life in Puerto Rico and rail against U.S. colonial rule.”
