The allure of the Killers has always lied in the passionate vocals of Brandon Flowers and the rock/pop band‘s knack for a hook — especially hooks bathed in synth and shimmery production. On Friday, the Las Vegas band released a new album, and Imploding the Mirage ought to appeal to listeners who first appealed to the group’s breakout singles, “Mr. Brightside,” “When You Were Young” and so on.

The album, the Killers’ sixth studio album overall and the follow-up to 2017’s Wonderful Wonderful, was led by the single “Caution,” which is very much a “classic” Killers composition — and features a guitar solo from Lindsey Buckingham:

Songs like “Blowback” also find the band hitting its stride. Here’s the Killers performing the track for the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night:

There are a few curve balls, so to speak. “Lightning Fields” features k.d. lang on guest vocals:

The driving “My God” features singer/songwriter Weyes Blood, and is also a standout:

“Running Towards a Place,” meanwhile, features a driving guitar hook and is a bit reminiscent in style to the War on Drugs and indie/psychedelia:

Imploding the Mirage may surprise some in its compositional depth — and it may very well be a result of the album’s creative approach. Flowers and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. are the only remaining permanent members of the band right now, guitarist Dave Keuning and bassist Mark Stoermer having “stepped away” from full-time duty in recent years. The L.A Times’ recent profile on the band implies that the personnel tweak and a renewed focus led to the new material that surfaces on Imploding the Mirage — and it’s an approach that works.

The Killers are back, although in a slightly refreshed iteration.
