You Can’t Stop Progress — and that’s precisely the motivation behind a new EP from The Immediate Family, the esteemed and roll supergroup featuring Danny Kortchmar (guitar and vocals), Waddy Wachtel (guitar and vocals), Leland Sklar (bass), Russ Kunkel (drums) and Steve Postell (guitar and vocals).

The group will release the new EP on April 23, and today its lead single was premiered in the form of a thunderous music video for the title track. Take a look:

“Can’t Stop Progress” was written by Kortchmar and Wachtel, accompanied by longtime Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch.

Said Kortchmar of the track: “I started ‘Can’t Stop Progress’ years ago with my pal Stan Lynch. I had the chord changes, and Stan came up with the title and a few lines for the chorus. Then it lay dormant for a while and every now and then I’d work on a lyric but couldn’t get a handle on where to go with it. Being in The Immediate Family lit me up creatively, and I finally stumbled on what I wanted to say and how to say it. After I had the lyric, I felt it still needed more music, and that’s where Waddy came in. I love working on songs with Waddy. He always can take an idea and move it forward, and that’s what happened with this song; he came up with the moving chord changes in the verse, which helped it tremendously.”

Wachtel adds: “Danny had all the words done, and I think he also had the musical shape for the chorus, but he was stuck for the main musical feel for the song and the music for the verses. I came up with the main guitar lick, and then I also found the chords for the verses to support his lyric. When it came to the bridge, I think I suggested we modulate up one key for the bridge and use the same basic chord progression and then drop back down to original key for the out choruses. I also suggested we do the song as a two-part harmony!”

Once released, Can’t Stop Progress will be the follow-up to the Slippin’ & Slidin’ EP, which was released in mid-October and featured songs including an updated version of Don Henley’s 1990 solo hit “New York Minute,” which was co-written by Kortchmar:

For some additional background on the Immediate Family, the rock and roll resume of the group is eye-popping:

The band is the evolution of a lifetime of friendship of playing music together: it began in the 1970s as a collective of studio and live musicians known as “The Section,” best known for both their work in support of some of the top selling singer/songwriters and solo singers in the history of music, as well as their own acclaimed instrumental albums. Collectively, Kortchmar, Sklar, Kunkel and Waddy Wachtel are four of the most recorded, respected & sought-after musicians in modern music and helped define the sound of a generation by supporting many of the most iconic artists of the last five decades, including James Taylor, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Keith Richards, Neil Young, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Stevie Nicks, Bryan Ferry, Lyle Lovett and Jimmy Buffett – as well as producers Lou Adler and Peter Asher.

With the addition of touring/session guitarist/songwriter/producer Steve Postell (who joined in 2018), the quintet of seasoned music industry veterans has been working on an as-yet untitled studio album that, when released, will be the group’s first U.S. release after the record Honey, Don’t Leave L.A., which was released in Japan.

In addition to the new musical activity, the Immediate Family will also be the focus of a new documentary film from Denny Tedesco as the follow-up to Tedesco’s acclaimed documentary on The Wrecking Crew.
