Have you heard about The Hu? No, not the classic English rock band out on a triumphant 50th anniversary tour with a new album out soon.

This article is about about The Hu, a Mongolian band formed in 2016 (so named due to Hu being a root word for “human” in Mongolian) that plays a brand of music that’s exceedingly difficult to describe. There’s traditional Mongolian throat singing, traditional Mongolian instruments like the morin khuur, and some intense, haunting compositions that dabble in what can best be described, maybe, as “metal.”

Like this one, “Wolf Totem,” which has its own incredible music video:

As you might imagine with a look, style and sound this unique, The Hu rose to viral fame in 2018 with a series of music videos on YouTube, including the one above and also “Yuve Yuve Yu,” which storms straight into your brain and smashes your soul to bits as you bob your head contently:

I mean. What is this? It’s fascinating, isn’t it? Taking traditional Mongolian musical themes and elements as the backbone to something this fresh and original is what music is all about, and it’s great.

The Hu released a full-length album after some of the YouTube hype had taken charge, and The Gereg is a captivating listen from start to finish.

This is unlike anything else around right now — maybe ever — and in our over-saturated music world, where the next “big thing” comes at you fifteen times a day in one form or another, this one stands out from the pack.

Catch The Hu on the road in the coming weeks, as the ensemble is out on its first North American tour, but fear not — if you miss them this time around, it seems inevitable that they’ll be back sooner than you think.
