“Looking for Somebody (To Love)” is one of the more energetic songs featured on Being Funny in a Foreign Language, the new studio album from English pop/rock/indie band The 1975 that the group released on Oct. 14.

A sprightly synth lead propels the song, though its upbeat tones are very much tempered by front man Matty Healy’s lyrics, which cast a darkness over an otherwise peppy, up-tempo indie/pop anthem.

Take the first verse, for example:

Somebody runnin’ through the field
Somebody shoulda stayed home
Somebody pickin’ up the body of somebody they were gettin’ to know
Somebody lackin’ in desire
The type you just don’t fuck
A supreme gentleman with a gun in his hand lo-lo-lo-lookin’ for somebody to love

Here’s a performance of the song, shared by The 1975 as one of a series of videos filmed with Vevo for the new album. It’s a high-energy performance with backup dancers, though again the song’s themes stand in stark contrast:

“Looking for Somebody (To Love)” lists Ilsey Juber, daughter of renowned guitarist/former member of Wings Laurence Juber, as a co-writer. She also contributed to “Oh Caroline,” one of the album’s standout songs with a slight John Mayer energy that received a live performance video on Friday to accompany the album release:

“Part of the Band” is another of the 1975’s videos with Vevo connected to the album release:

This new album cycle presents a chance for the group to make up for lost time, as its planned 2020 tour was cancelled due to the pandemic. Beginning in early November, the 1975 will finally get out on the road on a North American tour that is already sold out in multiple markets:
