Taylor Swift Accomplished Something No Artist Has Before with Her New Album ‘Folklore’

On July 24, Taylor Swift returned with a new album, Folklore. A surprise-released unveiled by the pop superstar on Thursday of that week, the album showed up online at midnight — but came as a pretty big surprise.

Also a surprise, at least to many, was the album’s concept and depth. Folklore, the result of an unexpected collaboration with Aaron Dessner of the National, Justin Vernon and Bon Iver among others, found Swift shedding her customary (and widely beloved) pop-oriented productions for a more laid-bare, stripped-back and “indie” feel.

The combination of the album’s surprise-release and the eyebrow-raising it inspired helped Swift achieve something on the music charts that nobody else has, ever: She became the first artist to debut in the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard 200 in the same week.

Her single “Cardigan” sealed the deal for this achievement when it landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100:

Billboard broke down the chart-smashing success of Folklore, Swift’s eighth full-length album and the follow-up to 2019’s Lover:

With “Cardigan” and Folklore, Swift is the first artist to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 in the same week. The Billboard 200 began on March 24, 1956, and the Hot 100 originated on Aug. 4, 1958.

If you haven’t listened to Folklore, you really ought to. It’s the type of record that is perfectly suited for those who think they WOULDN’T enjoy it — such is the impact of the creative curve ball Taylor Swift threw the music community.
