Last week, The Smashing Pumpkins moved into a new era with the news of ATUM, billed as a 33-track “rock opera” that will serve as a conceptual sequel to both 1995’s Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and 2000’s Machina/The Machines of God.

The massive project will be released in April, and was first previewed with the guitar-heavy “Beguiled,” which Billy Corgan and his band mates James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin and Jeff Schroeder performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday:

News of ATUM (pronounced “Autumn”) comes on the heels of the Pumpkins’ massive double-album Cyr released in July 2020, during a time in which Corgan was was already hinting at even newer material.

Mellon Collie, of course, was the record that pushed Smashing Pumpkins into the stratosphere and made them era-defining MTV stars with a host of songs (including “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” “Tonight, Tonight” and “1979”) that rank among the most popular of the decade’s alt/rock sound.

Here’s the music video for “Beguiled,” as well:

ATUM will be released on 3-CD or 4-LP, reflecting the album’s sprawling nature.

Corgan has also launched a Spotify podcast, Thirty-Three with William Patrick Corgan, which promises to debut each song from the album as well. Click here to listen to that.

Billing this as a direct sequel to two of the band’s most popular albums (especially in the case of Mellon Collie) is an interesting angle with which to generate buzz; it will be fascinating to see what type of reception fans and the general public give to the full album.

Fans can probably expect some of this new material coming up on the Smashing Pumpkins’ fall tour with special guests Jane’s Addiction, which is set to kick off in early October.
