For the first time since 2018, Smash Mouth has released a brand new original song — and if you didn’t know longtime lead singer Steve Harwell was no longer fronting the group, you might very well think it was his voice singing “4th of July,” debuted by the band just in time for the holiday.

Harwell, the voice behind all of Smash Mouth’s enduring pop/rock radio hits like “All-Star,” “Walking on the Sun” and others, reportedly retired form the band in late 2021 due to “health problems” that had resulted in some erratic live performances.

In stepped Zach Goode, who makes his debut on the high-energy anthem shared on Friday:

With Harwell having stepped down from his perch fronting Smash Mouth, it leaves founding bassist Paul DeLisle as the only consistent member of the band since its formation in 1994. The track is credited to all five band members: DeLisle, Goode, keyboardist Michael Klooster, drummer Randy Cooke and guitarist Sean Hurwitz.

“4th of July was always my favorite holiday when I was a kid,” said DeLisle of this new song. “Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas are all cold-weather affairs. The 4th of July is the only major holiday landing smack dab in the middle of summer. It needs a theme song, right?

“I had the idea for this track years ago, but it wasn’t until everyone put their own individual stamps on it that it became a classic Smash Mouth song.”

Back in March, Smash Mouth debuted a cover of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” as a way to introduce Goode to the masses:

Thus far, Goode seems like a great fit to step in for Harwell, with the band’s official website providing some context about his addition:

The New York City-born, Los Angeles-based Goode boasts a dazzlingly impressive, never ending list of stage credits as both actor and singer. His beautifully rough-and-tumble…yet pitch-perfect and rangy…vocal style instantly proving a perfect match for Smash Mouth’s beachy brand of high energy Alt-pop.

Smash Mouth is clearly back in action in a big way. Stay tuned for whatever the band has in store next.
