Out Now: ‘Everything Opposite,’ the New EP from Simple Creatures (Mark Hoppus and Alex Gaskarth)

Back in April, Simple Creatures — the collaborative project between Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus and All Time Low’s Alex Gaskarth — released its debut EP. It was the melding of two icons in the pop/punk world, and the music was anything but.
Synth-heavy power pop with jangly beats and hooks, it was pretty entertaining. And then in October, the pair released another EP, Everything Opposite.
It picks up where the first set of songs left off, arguably improving upon the formula the two laid out in their first release.
The video for “Thanks, I Hate It,” meanwhile, is tailor made for the hyper-online, those who spend hours of each day on the internet … like Hoppus, who routinely posts silly nonsense on his Twitter page. The video for the song, then, is more nonsense, featuring “deep fakes” of both him and Gaskarth taking over roles held by actors in famous TV infomercials of yesteryear.
With Simple Creatures, these two have hit a creative high point that sounds pretty far removed from their “regular jobs” in Blink-182 and All Time Low, allowing them to branch out a bit … and it pays off, because Everything Opposite features some of the catchiest material either has released in a while.
It’s proof that not all “side projects” have to be throwaway.
