She & Him, the indie duo comprised of singer Zooey Deschanel and guitarist M. Ward, have spent much of the past few weeks previewing Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson, their special new album dedicated to the Beach Boys mastermind that will be released on July 22.

The latest song shared from the project is their rendition of “Don’t Worry Baby,” a track that first appeared on 1964’s Shut Down Volume 2 and has become considered one of the best from Wilson and the Beach Boys.

Said Deschanel and Ward of the source material for this one:

“Don’t Worry Baby” is one of the greatest songs of all time. As with all the other songs on our tribute record, we had no interest in copycatting the original production – our version began with stripping the song down to just vocals and  a drop-tuned acoustic guitar and building from there. The inspiration for our version comes from a lot of different places but the biggest ones would be some of Chet Atkins guitar ideas, some drum ideas from Mick Fleetwood, and some synth inventions by Dave Smith (RIP).”

And “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”:

Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson will find She & Him diving deep into Wilson’s untouchable songwriting history, with the man himself even appearing with Deschanel and Ward on one song, “Do It Again.”

“In the spring of 2020, we started a list of our favorite Brian songs — a very long list,” said the duo in a statement. “We chose songs without any regard to their chart performance. The obscure ones hit us just as hard as the more popular songs — and all are ripe for re-imagining, re-interpreting, and re-inventing. Brian writes songs of beauty and loneliness and vulnerability better than anyone — and by sequencing them next to popular songs of confidence and love and fun, it creates a more complete picture of life on earth.”

Added Wilson: “Zooey and Matt did such mind-blowing versions of our songs. The harmonies are beautiful and right on. I love this record!”
