2022 marks (roughly) the 50th anniversary of Deuce – the second album from Rory Gallagher – an album which most fans consider a classic “must-own” by the Irish guitarist/singer-songwriter.

Originally released November 28th, 1971, Deuce now gets the golden 50th anniversary treatment on the UMC label on Friday September 30th, and is available for pre-order in 3 formats from our Rock Cellar store:

Deuce: 50th Anniversary [2CD] at our Rock Cellar store

The Deluxe CD Box Set Release deep-mines the archives and includes a new mix of the original album, 28 previously unreleased alternate takes, a 6-song 1972 BBC Radio ‘In Concert’, and 7 Radio Bremen radio session tracks.

It also includes a 64-page hardback book with rare, previously-unseen images by the late photographer Mick Rock. (The 2CD and 3LP sets are cut-down versions from the deluxe box.)

Gallagher always wanted to duplicate a live performance sound on his recordings so would record immediately after live concerts, and keep the production effects minimal. He produced Deuce himself and recorded it at Tangerine Studios – a small reggae studio in Dalston in East London. Rory: “I was looking for a raw earthy sound on Deuce and I was fairly pleased with it.”

Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr is quoted as saying: “There was one day when I was playing along with the Deuce album – which was a complete turning point for me as a guitar player.”

The album features the early lineup of Gerry McAvoy on bass and Wilgar Campbell on drums. (After the release of Deuce and 1972’s Live in Europe, drummer Campbell left the band due to a fear of flying and was replaced by Rod de’Ath.)

Long-admired by fellow guitarists for decades, Rory Gallagher’s legacy is cemented, and the album Deuce is part of that.
