Red Hot Chili Peppers Debut “Black Summer”; New Album ‘Unlimited Love’ Out 4/1

Vocalist Anthony Kiedis repeatedly sings “I’ve been waiting” throughout “Black Summer,” the long-anticipated new song from the Red Hot Chili Peppers that debuted today — and that’s precisely what fans of the Rock Hall of Fame band have been doing for ages.

But now the song is here, a preview of an upcoming album titled Unlimited Love, and it brings forth a new — and yet familiar — era for the group once again. Guitarist John Frusciante re-entered the mix with Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith toward the end of 2019, resuming duties that Josh Klinghoffer held after Frusciante departed the band in 2009.

A global pandemic then promptly halted any plans the band had for new activity with Frusciante, though action sprang up in October 2021 when the Chilis announced a worldwide stadium tour for 2022 and began teasing new music.

The build-up led to the premiere of “Black Summer,” which sounds exactly like what you’d imagine the Red Hot Chili Peppers would sound like in 2022 with Frusciante back on guitar. That is to say, it almost sounds like it could very well have been included on 2006’s Stadium Arcadium, the double-album that was the last recorded output featuring the guitarist until this new chapter.

Here’s the song’s music video — make note of Kiedis’ vocal delivery, which finds him adopting tones of a sea shanty on a handful of notes:

Unlimited Love, the new Chili Peppers album, will be out in April, ahead of their tour in the summer.

“Our only goal is to get lost in the music. We (John, Anthony, Chad and Flea) spent thousands of hours, collectively and individually, honing our craft and showing up for one another, to make the best album we could. Our antennae attuned to the divine cosmos, we were just so damn grateful for the opportunity to be in a room together, and, once again, try to get better. Days, weeks and months spent listening to each other, composing, jamming freely, and arranging the fruit of those jams with great care and purpose. The sounds, rhythms, vibrations, words and melodies had us enrapt.

We yearn to shine a light in the world, to uplift, connect, and bring people together. Each of the songs on our new album UNLIMITED LOVE, is a facet of us, reflecting our view of the universe. This is our life’s mission. We work, focus, and prepare, so that when the biggest wave comes, we are ready to ride it. The ocean has gifted us a mighty wave and this record is the ride that is the sum of our lives. Thank you for listening, we hope you enjoy it.
