Out Now: PUP’s New Album ‘The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND,’ the Soundtrack for Anxious Times

Canadian punk/indie band PUP is pretty much the perfect band for the world right now. Post-pandemic  — well, are we actually post-pandemic, or are we still actually in a pandemic? That probably depends on which media you consume, but that’s another topic entirely. The point is this: anxiety and confusion abound, and PUP’s music is filled to the brim with nervous energy, tones of regret and a certain uncertainty.

The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND is the title of the band’s new album made available today, April 1, and it’s a weird listen. An energetic, compelling and strange listening experience, which, given the band’s reputation and history of eliciting such emotional reactions from listeners, is a complimentary thing to say.

It features songs about “the perspective of a computer being overwhelmed unto death by actual human emotions”:

Another one, “Totally Fine,” sprang up from the band’s first sessions together after emerging from pandemic hibernation, and it’s an emotional swell as a result:

Another, “Matilda,” concerns the unfair casting aside of a once-cherished guitar and the guilt and shame front man Stefan Babock felt over casting it aside:

The circumstances of the album’s recording process, which came during the still-present COVID-19 pandemic and in the aforementioned “bat-filled mansion,” lent itself to a particularly inspired setting. As a news release states:

With more time in the studio, they were able to craft their songs sonically in a way they were unable to in the past, and allowed themselves to incorporate new instruments like piano, synths, horns, and more for the first time. Though made in madness-inducing isolation (aside from Peter and the bats, of course), PUP were remotely joined on the album by Sarah from Illuminati Hotties, Kathryn from NOBRO, Mel from Casper Skulls, and Erik from Remo Drive. The result is not just the next PUP record, but the *most* PUP record.

The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND is the sound of PUP coming to terms with its existence, kind of, but also the confusion that goes along with such self-discovery. It’s raw, it’s experimental, it’s damn catchy and it’s quintessentially PUP.
