Hear Phoebe Bridgers, Fiona Apple and the National’s Matt Berninger’s Politically Charged Update of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘7 O’Clock News/Silent Night’

Los Angeles-based indie singer/songwriter Phoebe Bridgers teamed up with Fiona Apple and Matt Berninger, front man of the National, for an updated version of Simon & Garfunkel‘s 1966 recording “7 O’Clock News/Silent Night,” just in time for the Christmas season.
Just as Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel accomplished with their original track, Bridgers and her indie rock colleagues took the opportunity to make a point about the current state of the United States, with Berninger filling the role of the newscaster reading current events — among them the Impeachment Inquiry and the recent conviction of Amber Guyger in Texas — while Bridgers and Apple sing “Silent Night” rather solemnly.
Bridgers included the following statement with the track:
“Happy Holidays to everyone whose family has been literally or figuratively torn apart by Donald Trump. And to my racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, hypocritical family members, fuck you. Thanks Fiona, Matt, Simon, and Garfunkel.”
All of the proceeds from the song will be donated to Planned Parenthood.
Bridgers will spend some of next year on the road with Berninger and the National at the following shows:
