Phil Chen, a renowned bassist and studio musician known for a career that included stints with Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, the Doors’ Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger and more, has died at the age of 75 after a fight with cancer.

A statement on Chen’s official Facebook page read as follows:

“With heavy hearts we share the news that Phil Chen passed away on the morning of December 14, 2021 after a long battle with cancer.

“He spent his final days surrounded by family and close friends and cherished time with his grandchildren who always brightened his day. He will be missed greatly and his contagious passion for music and positive energy on and off the stage will be remembered always.”

The list of luminaries Chen worked and recorded with over the years is deeply impressive and speaks to the innumerable talent and sterling reputation he had throughout the industry — a list including Brian May of Queen, Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jackson Browne and more.

Said drummer Carmine Appice:

Very sad to find out my old friend and rhythm section partner in the Rod Stewart Group Phil Chen lost his battle with Cancer today.

I loved Phil as a person and a great bass player . He will be missed. Photo from the Rod Experience show . RIP old friend. I lost Tim Bogert in Jan and now Phil. Two of my favorites. Sad!!! My heart goes out to Phil’s family. ❤️❤️❤️

May Phil Chen rest in peace.
