At the 2022 NAMM Show this past Saturday, June 4, legendary musical figure Peter Asher was honored as this year’s recipient of the heralded TEC Hall of Fame Award — an annual gala event at NAMM.

Per its official siteThe NAMM TEC Awards Hall of Fame was created in 1988 to honor pioneers of audio technology, as well as the music industry’s most accomplished producers and audio technicians.

The 2022 event was hosted by comedian Fred Armisen, and by all accounts was a highlight of the NAMM weekend in the international show’s first event in Anaheim since January of 2020.

Below, a recap of the TEC Awards, written by Kate Schank.

Peter Asher’s great body of work has included not only his time as half of the singer/songwriter duo Peter and Gordon, but work as a producer and manager who was very close to the Beatles.

A segment of the TEC Awards ceremony included a special documentary dedicated to his life, a production that featured members of The Beatles. While Asher served as A&R for Apple Records, he discovered talented artists like James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. He took the stage and led the crowd in an engaging trip down memory lane, tracing the path that led him where he is now.

He also recollected great moments like hearing Diana Ross sing in person, before introducing us to Bangles singer Susanna Hoffs, who appeared on stage to talk about how much she admired his work. Then we were joined by Sylvia Massey and OP, who remained on stage the rest of the night to present all of the amazing TEC Awards (full winners list here).

This video below highlights about 30 minutes of my personal favorite moments of the ceremony.

I was very happy to be a part of the welcome reception, the red carpet rolling out for the legendary Peter Asher, the honored winner at the Hall of Fame reception at the NAMM Show in its return to Anaheim, Calif.

This time, the event was hosted by comedian Fred Armisen, who was a perfectly fun and an exciting highlight of the evening.

Peter Asher seemed genuinely happy to receive the award, and also strapped on his acoustic guitar to lead us all in his classic song, “A World Without Love.” In addition to talking about his own career highlights, Asher made sure to pay homage to many other great sound engineers, inventors like Les Paul with the Innovation Award, among other producers and instrumentalists.

People wined and dined and enjoyed the spectacle and the live band performing through the night. Each and every TEC Award recipient was announced, and each person received their award on the stage; many of their acceptance speeches made obvious their deep appreciation for the accolades.

This was certainly a once in a lifetime achievement, one that complements the history of NAMM and is always among the most memorable events of each Show weekend.
