This past Saturday evening, the Preservation Hall Foundation staged a special live stream concert event, a fundraiser for musicians affected by the COVID-19 pandemic — and the four-hour concert featured an unexpected treat when Sir Paul McCartney appeared with a trumpet, leading the charge for an all-star rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In.”

Accompanied by Irma Thomas, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews, Jim James and Nathaniel Rateliff (all exercising social distance, of course), the performance from Macca was a delight:

Beatles fan site The Daily Beatle broke down the significance of this song as it pertains to Beatles history:

It was a hark back to the Beatles’ very first appearance on a 45 rpm back in October 1961. The single, “My Bonnie (lies over the ocean) c/w “When The Saints Go Marchin’ In” was first released in Germany under the name Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers, and then in Great Britain in January 1962. Come 1964, it would be rereleased and credited to The Beatles, with Tony Sheridan on vocals.
