The funky bass groove that opens “This Is The Place,” the new single released by longtime Oasis songwriter/guitarist Noel Gallagher, might throw fans a bit off guard on first listen.

With his Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds project’s latest direction, the Britpop icon is definitely veering a bit away from his roots and trying more poppy, dance-oriented material.

The song is the title track off a new EP scheduled for release on September 27. It’ll be the second EP from Gallagher since June’s Black Star Dancing EP, which also featured some more groove-oriented tracks than his typical singer/songwriter territory covered on past albums.

In addition to the title track, the This Is The Place EP will also feature new songs titled “A Dream Is All I Need To Get By” and “Evil Flower,” with remixes of the tracks making up the rest of the EP.

Of course, Noel’s estranged brother/ex-Oasis vocalist Liam Gallagher is readying a new album of his own, as the two brothers vie for headlines and news space against each other. Remarking about his more experimental dabblings to the Guardian in a new chat, Noel essentially said Liam held him back from such endeavors with Oasis:

“Liam famously said to me one night ‘I don’t like quirky, weird things,’” said Gallagher. “I was like ‘Oh, OK, well this is going to be fun, then…’”
