There’s something about “Silk Chiffon,” the new collaborative single from Los Angeles-based indie/pop group MUNA and pal Phoebe Bridgers that sounds lifted out of 1996. Rich, layered harmonies from singer Katie Gavin and Bridgers paired with an upbeat and very singable chorus make it one of the most immediate singles in recent memory.

On Monday night, the ensemble turned up at The Late Late Show with James Corden to perform “Silk Chiffon” on a stage resembling a school dance.

Take a look:

“Silk Chiffon” draws some of its power from the lyrics, which embrace femininity and have helped make it an anthem, of sorts, for the LBGTQ+ crowd since its premiere.

“It’s a song for kids to have their first gay kiss to,” said MUNA’s Naomi McPherson in a statement about the song. The collaboration with Bridgers came about as a result of MUNA’s new label home, Saddest Factory, an imprint of Dead Oceans, Bridgers’ label home, and marks a new era for the group.

The music video for “Silk Chiffon,” premiered a few months back, carries out the sentiments expressed in McPherson’s statement even more, a unifying embrace of queer love:

MUNA will carry this momentum on the road in a few months with a major spot in support of country/pop superstar Kacey Musgraves, starting up in January:
