In late March, as the world became fully immersed in the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shutdowns, Michael Stipe premiered a tender new song titled “No Time for Love Like Now.”

A collaboration between the longtime vocalist of R.E.M. and Big Red Machine, a project involving Aaron Dessner of the National, the song was poignant, hauntingly beautiful … and unfinished.

On Thursday, Michael Stipe and Big Red Machine premiered the final version of the song, and all of the elements that made the raw early recordings so powerful are amplified on the final take, which features Justin Vernon of Bon Iver on guitar. Watch the song’s video, featuring Stipe and directed by Michael Brown, known for his work with the National and Bon Iver over the years:

“I’m super excited to work with Aaron Dessner,” Stipe said of the collaboration in a statement. “And I’m thrilled with how the song and lyrics landed. The title says it all.”

Additional details on “No Time for Love Like Now,” per a press release:

In addition to Michael and Aaron…Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) on guitar, Brad Cook (Hiss Golden Messenger, War on Drugs) on synth, JT Bates (Lizzo, Poliça) on drums, Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman, (Nico Muhly, Sufjan Stevens) on keys, Clarice Jensen (Bjork, Nick Cave) and Yuki Numata Resnick (Beirut, Blonde Redhead) on violin / viola all perform on the master.

Stipe also announced two merchandise products that are now available in connection to the song as a means of furthering a cause he believes in:

Michael Stipe has designed a “No Time For Love Like Now” t-shirt and tote, available for purchase now HERE. All proceeds from the sales will go to The Equal Justice Initiative and Covid-19 Protest Relief Fund.
