The May 13 passing of Beckett Cypher, the 21-year-old son of Melissa Etheridge and former partner Julie Cypher was incredibly tragic, the young man succumbing to an opioid addiction.

Almost a month later, Etheridge has returned to social media with an update posted to fans on Monday, in which the singer/songwriter thanks them for all of their well-wishes and condolences.

She notes that she’s kept busy working on her home studio, a project Etheridge says “… has healed me, greatly. While nothing but time will heal the empty space in my heart, I have been hopeful watching the world rise up and ask for more love.

“I miss you all and am so grateful for your thoughts and well wishes.”

Melissa Etheridge also notes in her statement that she is readying a bit of news regarding “new plans to return to my music,” which should be made public in a matter of days.

Etheridge’s most recent album was 2019’s The Medicine Show, which she spoke about with us in an interview, noting how appreciative she is for the immediacy with which artists can reach fans these days:’

“You know, I’m grateful that people can listen to music everywhere and anywhere at the drop of a hat. They don’t have to go find that record and put it on. I can just be part of people’s lives anywhere they are and that’s great.

“Also, for the 1% or whatever that actually still buys vinyl and physical product, I really enjoy putting the time into making an album’s worth of music, to creating album art and to making a physical product. There are still people who enjoy that.”
