On April 24, Lucinda Williams will add to her versatile, influential and highly regarded catalog with a new album titled Good Souls Better Angels — and its new single is a bluesy, defiant stomp titled “You Can’t Rule Me.”

The song, premiered on Friday, finds Williams at her best, filling the song with as much attitude and personality as you’d hope from her at this point, set to some dirty blues from guitarist Stuart Mathis, drummer Butch Norton and bassist David Sutton. Stream it below:

The track opens the album, and is the second premiered thus far from Good Souls Better Angels. Stream the first, “Man Without a Soul,” below.

Per a news release, the album finds Lucinda Williams “addressing domestic and socio-political issues of our day with bold, forthright commentary and an urgency unlike anything she has ever recorded.” It will be Williams’ 13th studio album of original material, and the first since 2016’s The Ghosts of Highway 20.
