Who Is This Guy George Harrison?
Why do we love the Beatles?
Maybe it’s because they almost single-handedly shaped two generations and continue to influence new music fans, year after year? Strip away their incredible style and you’ve got s-u-b-s-t-a-n-c-e up the wazoo.
We’ve been celebrating and digging up every lone fact on the Beatles for over 5 decades. Just when you think it’s all been done here comes “George Harrison: Living In The Material World,” a new Beatles documentary by Martin Scorsese. If the trailer is any indication of how good this movie is going to be, we are in for a mind-blowing treat:
Most Beatles purists agree that “The Beatles Anthology,” a 5-disc musical history of the band was the end-all for archival story-telling. The depth and breadth of that series was mind-boggling, and most of the footage was never-before-seen.
Leave it to Martin Scorsese to find new footage, a new angle, and a new story to tell. A huge Beatles and George Harrison fan, Scorsese spent 4 years putting this film together, as a labor of love: “Like so many millions of people, I first came to know George through the music, which was the soundtrack of our world.”
Living In The Material World includes interviews with Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Yoko Ono, Neil Aspinall, Tom Petty, and Phil Spector, among others.
Scorsese is no stranger to the music feature film, having directed and/or produced Concert for New York City, Bob-Dylan – No Direction Home, the Rolling Stones documentary Shine A Light, and the TV series The Blues. His Band film The Last Waltz is still considered by many to be one of the most important and best music documentaries of all time.
If there is anything a film producer hates more than documentaries, it’s MUSIC documentaries, so it takes someone with the star-power and maniacal work-ethic of Scorsese to get something like Living In The Material World made. Fans of the Beatles should be happy to have a friend in Martin Scorsese.
The success of 2007’s Across The Universe in introducing Beatles music to yet another generation is an indication that Living In The Material World should enjoy widespread, mainstream viewing. And perhaps “The Quiet Beatle” will finally be seen to be as much a sex-symbol as those other two guys in the band. Whatever their names were.
George Harrison: Living In The Material World will be shown in two parts on HBO – October 5 and 6.
Nice story Jeff, about the QUIET ONE ! lol
