The passing of Kenny Rogers on March 21 elicited strong reactions from the country music community, as the all-time great and undisputed icon is a tough one.

On Wednesday of this week, CMT put together a virtual tribute concert paying homage to Rogers, with participation in the form of performances from the likes of Dolly Parton, Jason Isbell, Michael McDonald, Rascal Flatts, Lionel Richie, Lady Antebellum and more.

Parton turned in a wonderful rendition of “Sweet Music Man,” a Rogers composition she covered as a single in 1977:

Michael McDonald’s contribution to the special was “Just Dropped In,” which of course was made famous by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition in 1968:

The CMT Giants Kenny Rogers: A Benefit for MusiCares special will re-air on YouTube tonight, April 9, beginning at 8:00 p.m. EDT, with proceeds from donations made during the broadcast benefiting MusiCares’ COVID-19 Relief Fund.

After news of Rogers’ passing made the rounds in late March, the Rogers family issued a statement:

March 21, 2020 – The Rogers family is sad to announce that Kenny Rogers passed away last night at 10:25PM at the age of 81.  Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family.
In a career that spanned more than six decades, Kenny Rogers left an indelible mark on the history of American music. His songs have endeared music lovers and touched the lives of millions around the world. Chart-topping hits like “The Gambler,” “Lady,” “Islands In The Stream,” “Lucille,” “She Believes In Me,” and “Through the Years” are just a handful of Kenny Rogers’ songs that have inspired generations of artists and fans alike.
