This week, Rolling Stones guitarist/living legend to the utmost degree Keith Richards revealed to Rolling Stone that he’s given up drinking — and this time, he means it.

In a feature focused around the Stones’ upcoming No Filter U.S. tour dates, Keef, 74, essentially said this tour will be different from a personal perspective, since he’s mostly given up drinking entirely:

“It’s been about a year now,” Richards says quietly. “I pulled the plug on it. I got fed up with it.” While he admits he still has “a glass of wine occasionally, and a beer,” it’s a major step for a guy whose hedonism is a key part of his legend. “It was time to quit,” Richards says. “Just like all the other stuff.” Was it an adjustment? “You can call it that, yeah,” he says with a laugh. “But I don’t notice any difference really – except for I don’t drink. I wasn’t feeling [right]. I’ve done it. I didn’t want that anymore.”

According to the Rolling Stone piece, Ronnie Wood — who became sober in 2010 — was thrilled with Richards’ news, even saying that Richards has been a bit easier to deal with in his new form:

“He’s a pleasure to work with,” Wood says. “Much more mellow. He’s open to more ideas, whereas before I’d kind of grit my teeth and go, ‘He’s gonna give me some shit for saying this.’ Now, he’ll say, ‘That’s cool, man.’ ”

Good for you, Keith! See you on the road.
