For most of his career, there’s been a consistent yearning expressed through the music of John Mayer, and that’s very much the case with the singer/songwriter‘s new album, Sob Rock, which was released on Friday.

Co-produced by Mayer and Don Was, the record has a decidedly 1980s — and, especially, “yacht rock” feel to it, as you might surmise given the album artwork above, with song titles such as “Til the Right One Comes” and “All I Want Is To Be With You” chronicling his ongoing search for love.

The record features a handful of the standalone singles Mayer released in recent months, as most of the recording sessions took place during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and early ’21. It also includes as others that made their debut on the record — like “Shot in the Dark,” which was given a music video accompanying the album release:
