John Mayer Goes Retro with New LP ‘Sob Rock’ Out 7/16, Shares New Song “Last Train Home” (Listen)

You have to hand it to John Mayer for finding ways to keep it fresh — and now, almost twenty years to the day of the release of his breakthrough 2001 album Room for Squares, the celebrated guitarist/songwriter has announced a new album titled Sob Rock. It was co-produced by Mayer and Don Was, and is the culmination of recordings made during the pandemic.
The aesthetic of this album cycle, apparently, is “throwback vibes, as evidenced by this album cover that could be taken out of 1986:

In addition to the album news, Mayer dropped a new song called “Last Train Home,” which also is a time capsule from an earlier era. Here’s its video:
Sob Rock also features some of the standalone singles John Mayer released over the past couple of years, including “New Light”:
“I Guess I Just Feel Like”:
And “Carry Me Away”:
The track listing:
1. Last Train Home
2. Shouldn’t Matter But It Does
3. New Light
4. Why You No Love Me
5. Wild Blue
6. Shot in the Dark
7. I Guess I Just Feel Like
8. Til the Right One Comes
9. Carry Me Away
10. All I Want Is to Be With You
All this activity from Mayer comes as he is about to head out on another can’t-miss with Dead & Company, which was announced in mid-May:
