The Dark Side of the Moon is a new musical project (not a Pink Floyd tribute act, FYI) aiming to transform “musical themes from cinematography, TV shows and video games into powerful and epic modern metal tracks,” per a news release announcing the group’s first-ever single.

That single is “Jenny of Oldstones,” an adaptation of a fictional folk song in author George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones book series. The recorded version made for the HBO series was penned by Game of Thrones musical master Ramin Djawadi, with GoT screenwriters D.B. Weiss and David Benioff providing lyrics. The song appeared in two episodes of the drama series’ eighth and final season, and was recorded by Florence + the Machine for a version that appears in the show.

Here, The Dark Side of the Moon turns it into an even more epic, heavy metal anthem:

The Dark Side of the Moon combines the talents of guitarist Hans Platz (of the band Feuerschwanz), vocalist Melissa Bonny (of Ad Infinitum), drummer Morten Løwe Sørensen (of Amaranthe) and harp player Jenny Diehl (also of Feuerschwanz), each well-versed musicians with extensive histories as recording and touring artists.

As their first single, the group is hoping to strike a chord with audiences eager to hear more of this sort of thing: Classic TV show/video game/movie music presented in a new way:

“We are proud and happy to present “Jenny of Oldstones” – you’ve never heard the song from Game Of Thrones like this! Heavy Metal is incredibly expressive, there are so many ways to form a song’s musical and dynamic look – we create the images and emotions in the listener’s mind just by the power of music. From this came the idea to metalize film music – we bring you Cinematic Metal!

We can hardly believe it – half a year ago this song was the result of a bet made by Melissa and Hans, but this song led us to something really big – because of this one song Napalm Records signed us, an international band was formed, and now we are hard at work producing a full album! We’ll show you the dark side of songs you thought you knew!”‘

Stay tuned for more from the group.
