It’s been a while since we’ve heard new music from Jefferson Starship, but the band has returned with a new song, “It’s About Time,” the band’s first new song in 12 years.

Co-written by former member Grace Slick alongside lead singer Cathy Richardson and guitarist Jude Gold, the song is timely, thematically:

It’s about time to clean out the water
Sisters, wives, mothers and daughters
Can’t you feel the planet getting hotter?
How can you sit back and watch your own slaughter?

Old white men have had their turn
Thousands of years what have we learned
The hurricanes churn and the wild fires burn
We’re mourning our sons they’re forging more guns

Per Rolling Stone, David Freiberg recently explained what went into Jefferson Starship putting together new music, which will be released as an EP titled Mother of the Sun on Aug. 21.

He further explained that the project came together after the death of co-founding member Paul Kantner in 2016; the five remaining bandmates received the blessing from Kantner’s family to continue on playing under the Jefferson Starship name.

Said Cathy Richardson in a statement:

“Paul Kantner was our bandleader and the visionary who kept Jefferson Starship going through so many eras. He inspired so much about this record, from the messages in the lyrics to the title and album art to the collaborative process of creating music as a band with some of his original muses — Grace, Marty, and Pete. Mother of the Sun is dedicated to PK.”

The new Jefferson Starship EP features a song with former singer/guitarist Marty Balin, who passed away in 2018.

1. “It’s About Time”
2. “What Are We Waiting For?”
3. “Setting Sun”
4. “Runaway Again”
5. “Embryonic Journey”
6. “Don’t Be Sad Anymore”
7. “What Are We Waiting For (Extended Version)”
