There’s a duality to Jack White. On one side, the loud, boisterous and creatively frenetic garage-rock bandleader. On the other, a more subdued, singer/songwriter sort of persona.

He’s explored both throughout his versatile career, from his early days in the Michigan bar scene to his work with Meg White as the White Stripes and across his various solo projects. This year, he’s now released a pair of disparate solo records, the second of which arrived today, July 22.

Titled Entering Heaven Alive, it’s the companion piece to Fear of the Dawn, which came out in early April and showcased his electric side with a selection of songs that fit in perfectly alongside his earlier works.

White introduced his second new record of the year with a pair of music videos, first for “If I Die Tomorrow”:

And “Love is Selfish”:

Here’s a performance of “If I Die Tomorrow” from Colbert, as aired Thursday evening:

Entering Heaven Alive commands its own spot in Jack White’s catalog of music. A nod to the singer/songwriter albums of decades previous, the songs — which feature strings, acoustic guitars and resonant melodies — find him at the absolute top of his game, and given the boisterous personality of Fear of the Dawn, encapsulate his dynamic songwriting ability.
