Note: The following includes a recap of Incubus, Sublime with Rome and The Aquadolls at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine, Calif., on Aug, 27, 2022, interspersed with photos of the show from Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, Calif., on Aug. 26.

The global pandemic prevented Incubus from properly touring in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Morning View, the Calabasas, Calif. rockers‘ 2003 album that scored the group its best-selling record and spawned hit singles in “Wish You Were Here” and “Nice to Know You.”

This summer, Incubus packed up the gear and headed back out on the road with special guests Sublime with Rome and the Aquadolls. The tour hit a bit of a snag when front man Brandon Boyd threw his back out during sound check — prompting the postponements of a few shows earlier this month — but it picked back up promptly, and rolled through California this past week with rousing performances that reaffirmed the band’s vitality.

Keep in mind, Incubus’ most recent studio album is 2017’s 8, not including the 2020 EP Trust Fall (Side B). Instead, recent (pre-COVID) activity included a triumphant 20th anniversary tour celebrating their breakthrough album 1999’s Make Yourself and, now, this summer run. It wasn’t officially billed as a Morning View anniversary tour, though nearly all of the album’s tracks have made an appearance along the way.

Lest there be any thoughts of Incubus falling out of relevance over the years, allow the feverish excitement — and nearly sold-out crowd, if not totally sold-out crowd — that greeted the band on Aug. 27 at FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine suggest otherwise.

The outdoor venue was absolutely packed with adoring fans singing, screaming and clearly enjoying every second of seeing Boyd, guitarist Mike Einziger, bassist Ben Kenney, drummer Jose Pasillas and DJ Chris Kilmore do their thing on stage.

The vibes were good from the get-go, openers The Aquadolls setting the tone with their punky, beach-y energy and a cover of the Go-Go’s classic, “Vacation.” Following the trio’s spirited opening set was Sublime with Rome, who took the stage to rapturous enthusiasm and many, many puffs of smoke emanating in the air.

Bassist Eric Wilson is the lone remaining member of Sublime’s core lineup involved with this project, as drummer Bud Gaugh exited the group in 2011. The current lineup is Wilson, singer/guitarist Rome Ramirez and drummer Carlos Verdugo, accompanied by a horn player.

Fully knowing the expectations of the audience, Sublime with Rome packed its set with several classic Sublime tracks, many of which were played in excessive rotation over the years on KROQ (and, in the Bay Area, the defunct Live 105). This, coupled with the inebriation of the crowd enjoying the cocktails and beer available at nearly every stand in the concourse, made the band’s set a joyous singalong to “April 29, 1992,” “Wrong Way,” “Garden Grove,” “What I Got,” “Santeria” and more.

Sublime with Rome was a perfect tour partner for Incubus on this run, really, a set that kept everybody engaged and dancing throughout.

As for those headliners: the set list assembled for this tour has been especially deep. In addition to most of the Morning View tracks, an eclectic mix of FM radio hits (“Warning,” “Megalomaniac,” the show-closing “Drive”) and fan favorites (“Nowhere Fast,” “Sick Sad Little World”) and more were added in for good measure.

The result was an enthralling set from a band that is still very much a must-see live act, even if Boyd was relegated to a stool for most of it. He occasionally ventured away from his post to move around the stage, though his physicality was obviously a bit hindered by that back injury — which he informed the audience was getting better.

Boyd’s voice — always one of the best qualities of Incubus’ music, and one that helped the group separate from the pack in the early 2000s — was pristine, leading the band through different eras of its catalog, even touching on the Doors’ “Riders on the Storm” in the middle of “Are You In?” for a fun surprise.

Incubus may not be the most prolific studio band these days, but they still very much have that spark that put the world on notice in the late ’90s, as they graduated from up-and-coming young funk-rockers to arena-fillers with a versatile set of classic tracks that hold up very well today.

That was made very apparent on this tour, and they’re sure to delight the masses once again whenever the next tour rolls around (and Boyd’s back fully heals, of course).
