Surprise — Hayley Williams of Paramore has another new solo album due out imminently, the first release from the singer/songwriter since 2020’s captivating and cathartic Petals for Armor.

FLOWERS for VASES / descansos will be released Friday, Feb. 5, as Williams announced in a series of social media posts on Wednesday evening.

Williams’s website now redirects to a dedicated page with a very short song snippet.

In an Instagram Story, Williams noted that the new album isn’t really a follow-up to Petals for Armor. If anything, it’s a prequel, or some sort of detour between parts 1 and 2 of Petals.

She also revealed that she wrote and recorded the album entirely by herself at home in Nashville, noting that “that’s a career first for me.”

Hayley Williams has maintained a very visible and active social media presence throughout 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic spoiled her chance to properly tour in support of Petals for Armor, but she has consistently uploaded performance clips from home, covering the likes of Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, Bjork and more.

In early December, she and some musician pals (including Julien Baker) staged an excellent NPR Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, playing three Petals for Armor songs:

In late December, she released a short EP of acoustic songs, so it’s not really much of a surprise that she found the time to also devote to writing additional new material.

Petals for Armor was a stark stylistic departure from her years of work fronting the alt/punk/pop band Paramore (which, she maintains, is “still a band” despite this continued solo activity), and it will be very interesting to hear where this burst of creativity has brought her with FLOWERS for VASES / descansos.
