For each of the past two weekends, Billie Eilish delivered powerhouse headlining performances at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, taking the main stage each Saturday night with her brother/collaborator FINNEAS for lengthy sets of her hits and fan favorites. Eilish chose to mark her first headlining slots at the mega-fest by inviting some special guests that inspired the young singer along her path to superstardom. This past Saturday, that was Hayley Williams from the band Paramore.

Williams appeared onstage to help sing the set-closing “Happier Than Ever” after sitting down halfway through the set for an acoustic performance of “Misery Business,” Paramore’s breakthrough 2007 single that has become an anthem of the then-burgeoning pop-punk scene and put Williams in the upper echelon of stars of the era:

Hayley Williams has somewhat distanced herself from “Misery Business” in recent years due to the song’s lyrical themes, which do come across as a bit dated in today’s musical climate. But, of course, a one-off such as a Coachella surprise with Billie Eilish is a fitting opportunity to dust off the track.

The song also experienced a resurgence of attention, despite Williams’ efforts to leave it in the past, when she and former Paramore guitarist Josh Farro were added to the writing credits for Olivia Rodrigo’s smash-hit single “Good 4 U” due to similarities between the two songs.

As for Eilish and her Coachella surprises: Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz was Eilish’s guest in the first weekend’s performance. He emerged accompanied by Posdnuos of De La Soul to perform “Feel Good Inc.”:

Williams released a pair of stunning solo albums over the past couple of years, 2020’s Petals for Armor and its follow-up, the intimate 2021 effort FLOWERS for VASES / descalsos. She has yet to announce a tour in support for those records, the pandemic having thrown a wrench in plans she did have previously.

For this Coachella one-off, Williams shared a behind-the-scenes video of how she obtained her look for the performance using her own brand, Good Dye Young. Here’s what went into that look, courtesy of a TikTok video shared by the company:

Paramore is set to return to the stage in October for the When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas.

Whether the band plays “Misery Business” remains to be seen, however.
