Watch Guns N’ Roses Cover Soundgarden’s ‘Black Hole Sun’ in Pro-Shot Clip from 2019

For a while now, Guns N’ Roses have been dipping into the vault of the band’s robust recent live catalog for clips as a means of keeping fans entertained. The latest Not In This Lifetime Selects (named after the band’s big reunion tour of the past few years) video, shared just ahead of the end of the year, features a few songs from The Exit 111 Festival in Tennessee, circa 2019.
This 31-minute selection of live performances features GnR playing “Live and Let Die,” “Shadow of Your Love,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and, most intriguingly, a cover of Soundgarden‘s “Black Hole Sun,” with Axl Rose delivering a vocal tribute to the late Chris Cornell.
Watch the full clip below (“Black Hole Sun” begins around the 6:55 mark):
This Soundgarden homage wasn’t a one-off for Guns N’ Roses, who adopted the cover as a means of toasting Cornell frequently on the Not In This Lifetime tour — and, to date, GnR has covered “Black Hole Sun” 99 times.
The ties between Cornell and GnR are strong. Just this past July, the Cornell family marked his birthday with a previously unheard cover of GnR’s “Patience”:
That recording of “Patience” was featured on No One Sings Like You Anymore, a collection of Chris Cornell covers that his family released in early December — a group of recordings that the singer recorded in 2016, shortly before his death a year later.
Said Vicky Cornell, Chris Cornell’s widow, of the new collection (via Stereogum):
This album is so special because it is a complete work of art that Chris created from start to finish. His choice of covers provides a personal look into his favorite artists and the songs that touched him. He couldn’t wait to release it. This moment is bittersweet because he should be here doing it himself, but it is with both heartache and joy that we share this special album. All of us could use his voice to help heal and lift us this year, especially during the holiday season. I am so proud of him and this stunning record, which to me illustrates why he will always be beloved, honored, and one the greatest voices of our time.
Toni Cornell, his daughter, offered this regarding her father’s new music:
When my dad was making this album, it was so fun — I remember waking up in the morning, having breakfast with him and going with him into the studio. We would take our piano lessons there, and Christopher would play video games with Brendan and my dad. We got to experience so much with him and have so many amazing memories. I’m really happy to be sharing this album. We love you, daddy.
And son, Christopher:
We had so much fun in the studio during this time, and on days off we’d go to Tree People and hike around there. We would also play hide and go seek inside the Beverly Hills Hotel and when security would show up they would think it was so funny that my dad was running through fire escapes with us. For me this album represents who my dad was. I’m really proud of him and his work. I hope you all love this record as much as I do.
