With just hours remaining in what’s been a terrible year on a global scale, Elvis Costello is ready to look ahead to what the new year might bring. The singer/songwriter capped off a busy year of new music with a fresh recording titled, appropriately, “Farewell, OK 2020,” featuring lyrics like this:

Farewell, OK/You’ll be on way/You’ll be on your own now/Much to my dismay/I can’t go on/After what you’ve done.

This surprise musical sendoff to 2020 comes after the Oct. 29 release of Hey Clockface, Elvis Costello’s 31st studio album and the follow-up to 2018’s Look Now.

Good riddance, 2020.

More on the Hey Clockface album, via the Elvis Costello website:

Costello tells us, “I sang live on the studio floor, directing from the vocal booth. We cut nine songs in two days. We spoke very little. Almost everything the musicians played was a spontaneous response to the song I was singing. I’d had a dream of recording in Paris like this, one day.”

The ensemble, dubbed, “Le Quintette Saint Germain” by Costello, was recruited for these dates by Steve Nieve (who plays grand piano, upright piano, organ, mellotron & melodica) features Mickaél Gasche on trumpet, flugel horn and serpent, Pierre-François ‘Titi’ Dufour on cello and the drums, percussion and high harmonies of Ajuq.
