Six years is a long time between records, but California indie/rock band Delta Spirit didn’t lose any of its magic between its latest album, What Is There, and its earlier material.

What Is There is the band’s first release since 2014’s Into the Wide, after which the band mates (Front man Matthew Logan Vasquez, multi-instrumentalist Kelly Winrich, bassist Jonathan Jameson, guitarist Will McLaren and drummer Brandon Young) spent time focusing on other projects before reconnecting in 2018 and working on new music again.

The result is a thoughtful 10-song collection of new material, the band once again inhabiting a place of earnest emotion throughout.

Take “How Bout It,” a pre-release single, as an example. The song’s ambitious music video was directed by Michael Parks Randa and (per a news release) “shot during the COVID-19 pandemic at over 30 locations throughout North America. After speaking with roughly 70 cinematographers to learn about their particular circumstances, Randa directed 30 individuals across the country to safely document an intimate portrait of Americans in isolation.”

Part of the journey of Delta Spirit — and specifically the musicians being able to reconnect as friends as much as band mates — is the creativity such a rekindling brought to the new music, an extension and progression of the sound that first put the group on the map.

The album’s title track, which closes the record in elegant fashion, features lines like this:

I’ll find you in another life
As if that could exist
Maybe you should take my place
Maybe after I’m dead
If it’s one more record
Let it play on forever
Keep flipping the B-side to the A
And may it remain in our memories
The joy we found in the journey
Never needed to get there anyway
What is there …

It’s a powerful way to close out an album of rebirth, summing up both the general idea of life’s journey being more important than the destination — while also characterizing the experience Delta Spirit went through as a group that led them to where they are now, having released a strong new record that stands up well alongside their previous four.
