“Pointing at the Moon” is a new song from longtime Van Halen vocalist David Lee Roth. A sparse, intimate composition pairing “Diamond Dave” with an acoustic guitar and piano progression, it puts his unmistakable voice on full display:

In keeping with the mystique of Roth’s career and public persona, there’s little to no additional information available regarding the recording, which is his first since a series of songs that made their debut in 2020.

One of those, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow Bar and Grill,” came out in Nov. 2020 and was a tribute to Roth’s fallen band mate and friend, Eddie Van Halen, who had died the month before after a lengthy fight with cancer:

Roth then announced a planned Las Vegas residency, referring to the scheduled shows as a “retirement party,” after which he would presumably hang up his sequined pants and effervescent stage presence once and for all.

The COVID-19 pandemic though, cancelled the residency, and there was little else in the news from Roth (outside of a strange back-and-forth with Gene Simmons) until this latest song premiere.

With no upcoming “retirement” concerts in the near future, it remains to be seen whether David Lee Roth re-engages with Vegas for a run of gigs when it is deemed safe to do so.

For what it’s worth, Roth said this to FOX Digital when asked about potentially making up these farewell shows in the future:

“It’s not about me anymore. When the benefits for Kentucky, Colorado, and Farm Aid kick in; Call me.”
