On Aug. 27, CHVRCHES will release a new album, Screen Violence, the Scottish indie/pop band’s first album since 2018.

Its latest preview is “How Not to Drown,” a song debuted on Wednesday that features a guest appearance from Robert Smith of The Cure. Lending his unmistakable vocal talents to a verse and backing vocals, he pairs with CHVRCHES vocalist Lauren Mayberry in excellent fashion, the collaboration giving the song a very powerful, urgent tone:

Tell me how
It’s better when the sun goes down
We will never escape this town
I wasn’t scared when he caught me
Look what it taught me

Here’s the song’s stunning music video, as shared Thursday:

“How Not to Drown” joins the previously debuted single “He Said She Said,” which dropped in late April:

Screen Violence will be the fourth full-length album from CHVRCHES to date and the follow-up to 2018’s Love Is Dead.

“I think for me it was helpful to go into the process with the idea that I could write something escapist almost,” said Mayberry of the album. “That felt freeing initially, to have concepts and stories to weave your own feelings and experiences through but in the end, all the lyrics were definitely still personal.” While Martin Doherty adds, “To me, the screen aspect was a bit more literal. When we were making the record, it was like half of our lives were lived through screens. What began as a concept was now a lifeline.”

What’s Robert Smith doing on this piece of crap? He was much better on the Not In Love cover by Crystal Castles – this doesn’t rate.
