Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Christian Lee Hutson can be considered part of the Phoebe Bridgers Expanded Songwriting Universe; after the two met in 2018, he lent his services to the 2018 boygenius EP Bridgers released with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker as well as her Better Oblivion Community Center project with Conor Oberst and her 2020 album Punisher.

Bridgers produced Hutson’s album Beginners, which was released in May 2020.

All this to say: Their careers have become quite interconnected in recent years, and that continues once again with “Strawberry Lemonade,” a new song premiered by Hutson on Thursday. The video for the song was filmed at Manhattan’s Washington Square Park and features some slick 360-degree angles.

Musically, it’s a gentle acoustic/folk song heavy on intriguing lyrical phrasing (“Pain is a way you can move through time / visit people that are gone in your mind“), before shifting gears for the final few minutes.

The song was produced by both Bridgers and Oberst.

“Strawberry Lemonade” is a series of vignettes about memory, letting go and holding on,” Hutson said in a statement. “I remember talking to a friend, around the time that I wrote it, about the relentless repackaging of 1960’s culture; so some of that ended up in there. The laugh at the beginning of the song is my friend Harry who plays bass on the song.”

Catch Christian Lee Hutson on the road with The Magnetic Fields in the coming weeks.
